wandi artist bio
Born in China in 1994, Wandi is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Sydney.
Her practice spans painting, photography, installation, and documentation. She began creating art in 2015 while pursuing an undergraduate degree in economics, and later completed a Master of Art Curatorship at the University of Melbourne. In 2018, she co-curated her first exhibition, Amplified, Redefined: Protest for Change, at the George Paton Gallery.
Wandi’s work explores feminism and centers on the complexities of female identity. Rooted in her personal experiences growing up in China, her practice engages with cultural and societal structures that shape womanhood.
In recent years, she has focused on transforming everyday objects into installations. By recontextualizing the mundane, Wandi highlights the subtle forces that contribute to the construction of femininity. In one of her recent works, she stages a mock gender reveal party using party balloons and traditional red ribbons—symbols of luck in Chinese superstition—to reflect on the expectations placed on women in the context of marriage.
Since 2024, Wandi has been practicing Gongbi (工笔), a traditional Chinese painting technique. Through its meticulous and delicate approach, she continues to explore themes of softness, discipline, and the poetics of the everyday.
Anger is power. Anger is a reason.
